The buildings at Rahovitza have never had indoor toilets and we choose to keep it that way. We have build an outdoor composting toilet with a magnificent view using all natural building materials. Our toilet is made from a stone foundation, a wooden structure and a straw-earth infill. The roof is made using the traditional stone technique.
The walls are plastered with earth plasters inside and out. A stone paving leads to this structure. The composting is done in 120l barrels. Only the solid feces are collected and mixed with hay and toilet paper. The compostation takes about 3 months. The inoffensive product can then be used as fertilizer. The liquid waste is diluted with the gray water from the nearby sink and directly decomposed by ground bacteria into nitrogen-rich fertilizer.
